Ansel Adams was an American photographer active in the nineteenth century. He first became interested in piano at age twelve and his interest in the arts grew from there. He took his first photos of Yosemite National Park with a Kodak Brownie Box camera given to him by his father. Adams produced his first portfolio, Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras, in 1927. The portfolio was a big success due to promotion from Albert Bender. Of his 60 year photography career, the 1930's were the most productive. Although Adams died in 1984, his legacy still lives on today. As quoted by John Szarkowski in the introduction to
Ansel Adams: Classic Images, " The love that Americans poured out for the work and person of Ansel
Adams during his old age, and that they have continued to express with
undiminished enthusiasm since his death, is an extraordinary phenomenon,
perhaps even unparalleled in our country's response to a visual artist."
